The India Transit Visa is a short-term travel authorization that allows you to pass through India while en route to another country.

Here you can find out exactly how the Transit Visa can be used, the requirements, and how to apply.

What Is the India Transit Visa?

The Transit Visa is specifically designed for travelers who need to stay in India for a short period before continuing their journey. Unlike a Tourist or Business Visa, the Transit Visa is strictly for layovers and does not permit tourism or business activities.

The Transit Visa is particularly useful for travelers who have long layovers in Indian airports and wish to leave the airport during transit.

Without the Transit Visa, you must stay within the designated international transit areas of the airport — you’re not allowed to clear immigration.

Who Needs an India Transit Visa?

You must apply for an India Transit Visa if any of the following applies to you:

  • Layover in India exceeds 24 hours.
  • You plan to exit the airport during transit.
  • Next flight requires changing terminals or airports, passing through Indian immigration.

India Transit Visa Validity and Duration

The India Transit Visa is valid for 15 days from the date of issue, meaning you must enter India within this period.

You can stay in India for a maximum of 72 hours per transit.

The Transit Visa is single-entry, meaning it can be used for only one transit. If you plan to transit through India multiple times, you must apply for a new Transit Visa for each stopover.

It’s crucial to plan your transit carefully, as overstaying beyond the 72-hour limit is not permitted under this visa category. If a longer stay is required, you should consider applying for a Tourist e-Visa or another suitable visa type.

Completed visa application form

Some applicants may be required to show financial statements proving they can support themselves during transit.

How to Apply for an Indian Transit Visa

Follow these steps to apply for a Transit Visa:

1. Obtain the visa application form

  • The form can be collected from the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.
  • Some consulates may require applicants to download and print the form.

2. Prepare required documents

  • Gather all necessary documents, including a passport, flight tickets, and visa for the next destination.

3. Submit the application at the Indian consulate

  • The applicant must visit the Indian embassy or consulate to submit their visa request.
  • Some embassies may require an appointment before submission.

4. Pay the visa fee

  • Visa fees vary by nationality and consulate location.
  • Payment is usually accepted via bank draft, money order, or cash, depending on the embassy's policies.

5. Provide biometric data (if required)

  • Some applicants may need to provide fingerprints and a photograph.

6. Wait for processing

  • Processing time is typically 3 to 7 business days but can take longer depending on the applicant’s nationality.

7. Collect the visa

  • If approved, the passport with the transit visa will be available for pickup at the consulate.
  • Some embassies may offer a courier return service.

Important Notes for Transit Travelers

The India Transit e-Visa does not allow tourism, work, or business activities. If you need to stay longer in India for any of these purposes, you must apply for a different visa type.

The 72-hour limit is strictly enforced, and overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or entry bans for future visits.

If you have multiple layovers in India, each transit requires a separate visa application.

Make sure your flight ticket is confirmed before applying, as proof of onward travel is mandatory.

The India Transit Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible, meaning travelers cannot switch to another visa type once in India.
